Dave Tompkins

Author, music journalist, former columnist for The Wire. Tompkins’ book How To Wreck A Nice Beach: The Vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop is a riveting saga of technology and culture and tracks the history of the vocoder, once used to guard phones from codebreakers during World War II to its repurposed present form as a voice-altering tool for musicians. He has contributed to Grantland, Paris Review, Slate, The Wire, Spin, and Pitchfork, and has presented on the vocoder across the globe.
